Dramaturgo británico. Estudió en la Universidad de Oxford y posteriormente se dedicó a escribir, en especial, obras dramáticas para televisión. Su innovadora serie
Dinero caído del cielo (
1978) combinaba secuencias fantasiosas con escenas musicales en las cuales los actores doblaban antiguas grabaciones de canciones de época. Su más famosa pieza dramática para televisión fue la autobiográfica serie de ocho capítulos
El detective cantante (
1986), que abordó sus terribles ataques de artropatía psoriásica, donde integró el humor, la emoción y notables actos musicales. Entre sus otras obras para la pantalla chica se cuentan la supuesta sacrílega
Brimstone and Treacle (1976, televisada en 1987) y
Lipstick on Your Collar (
1993). También escribió los guiones para películas como
